Blu-ray Planet Earth for ~$38 shipped on Blu-ray

Someone posted this on the Blu-ray.com forum and I jumped on it. I couldn't help but share here.

On Amazon's UK site you can get Planet Earth (BBC version) for $38 American shipped. It's region free and actually contains more content than the Discovery channel version, so everyone jump on it.

Yeah, I'm glad someone finally replied. SOOOO many people at the Blu-ray.com forums have grabbed this. I'm not sure why Amazon.com isn't selling it this cheap, but at least we're still getting our hands on it for under $40.

No problem! I wasn't the one who originally saw this deal on amazon, I'm just passing it on from somebody on the Blu-ray.com forums.

I can't wait to get mine in the mail. The UK version is a 5 disc set (instead of 4 disc sold in US) and contains more footage.

With the current exchange rate, it's running about $36 today in the US.

You mean the UK BBC version contains 1 more disc than the US BBC version? I checked the review on highdefdigest and it says 4 discs for the BBC version, I assume US release. What's on the 5th disc?

A documentary on Snow Leopards, as I recall.

Fair warning; The construction quality of the UK 5-disc set isn't anywhere near as good as the usual 4-disc set available in the US. The cardboard is very thin and the disc trays are made of fairly flimsy plastic. The set is similar to the US DVD set, except... crappier.

Many people who ordered the HD DVD version found sets that were pretty banged up in transit. My first set was demolished and the replacement Amazon sent out still had a number of dings.

I imagine they would if they ship to the US. You just have to pay for it (a few bucks for air mail).

Shouldn't the bluray scratch coating protect it from getting scratched in transit?

The "case" this UK version comes in is a joke. Some of the set is encoded in 1080i (extras). It does come with a 5th disc containing two hour-long "BBC: Natural World" documentaries -- Snow Leopards and Desert Lions.

US BBC release comes in nicer case.

I seem to recall reading something to the effect of there being certain bonus content contained within the UK 5-disc set which is 1080i, which by law requires the entire set to be sold as 1080i.

AFAIK, the feature content is 1080p.

The Discovery Channel version of PE is 1080i through and through, though.
