Not sure if it was a one store only sort of deal, but I was at the Sony Outlet Store in Camarillo, CA last weekend, and they were selling the player for under 300 bucks (between 290 and 295, I believe).
Just a heads up... |

i honestly wouldnt put any money into this player unless it was under $100. The only audio it will support is standard lossy formats and PCM. no True-HD or DTS:MA support

I have been in the market for a Sony standalone for a few months as well. I am waiting for the 550 as it decodes and bitstreams all of the audio.
The players you are talking about are most likely refurbished. Sony has some of them on its web site for that price. If they were like 100 bucks I would buy one to hold me over and then sell it or give it to my dad but for 400 bucks I am waiting.
