'Titantic' to set sail again — in 3-D
I sure hope that Titanic and Star Wars that follows start a trent toward a whole new industry of our favorites like The Wild Bunch and Lawrence of Arabia being converted over to 3D. What do you guys think. Is this like messing around with the film makers intent?By Kimberly Nordyke
Hollywood Reporter Hollywood Reporter
James Cameron's movie is getting rereleased in 3-D via Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment.
The date was chosen to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship setting sail (April 10).
The 3-D conversion is being overseen by Cameron — who wrote, directed and produced the movie — and his Lightstorm producing partner Jon Landau, who also produced.
"There's a whole generation that's never seen Titanic as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen," Cameron said. "And this will be 'Titanic' as you've never seen it before, digitally remastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3-D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."
Paramount chairman/CEO Brad Grey noted that the rerelease coincides with the 100th anniversary of the studio, while Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen/CEOs Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman added that 'Titanic' is "one of the greatest sources of pride" in studio history.
Titanic" — which stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio — is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, behind Cameron's "Avatar."
The movie, which was nominated for a record 11 Oscars, was first released in 1997.

This film serves no purpose to be in 3D. And to top it off, $5 says that is the day Avatar 3D hits retail (no longer an exclusive). *shivers*

Yes an entire generation havent been able to watch the film "as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen"......but there is also an entire generation that havent been able to watch the damn thing as it was meant to be watched at home, on Blu-ray....
Why the hell they have held the release of this film back for so long is just annoying as all hell to me. They could have released this years ago on Blu-ray with a nice 100th aniversary edition saved for next year.
crappy censored to all hell versions of HD channels or upconverted from DVD is no way to have to watch the second most sucessfull movie ever made.PSN : DaveS1138

At least we will get a Blu-ray release of it soon after as you can't do 3D on packaged media without Blu-ray 3D. If the 3D spectacle in theaters pays for the 4K restoration, I'm cool with that.
Titanic though is a title, especially done by Cameron who knows how to do it right and can afford to do it, that I would not mind seeing in 3D because of its achievements in movie history..

I don't understand the brouhaha. Same movie, same actors, same dialog, etc. Only difference is the conversion to 3D. No real difference to when studios convert mono films into surround sound films for home video releases. Or when they convert 5.1 theaterical releases to 7.1 for their HV release.
In both cases for 2012, the film conversion is being overseen by the original film makers; Lucas and Cameron.
I would love to see Ridley Scott do a 2D to 3D converson of Blade Runner. -

For some reason, I doubt the millions of 15 year old girls who drove this movie to the top have any interest in seeing it in 3d. But who knows.
Movie sucked, anyhow. -
