Default PlayStation 3 Does 3D Movies in 1080p, Games in 720p

According to Sony's Simon Benson, it's all about the framerate.

Native 1080P at 60fps would take up to much bandwidth on a 50GB disc if the game was encoded for 3-D. Too bad the Blu-ray format does not support native 30fps and 60fps at 1080P for games. Multi-layer 100GB, 128GB, and 200GB Blu-ray discs could handle the increased bandwidth with a new version of a game system that could read the multi-layer discs.

The Playstation 1 used CD-ROM technology, Playstation 2 used DVD-ROM technology, Playstation 3 used BD-ROM technology, and maybe if there is going to be a Playstation 4 in several years it might use an improved optical disc technology better then Blu-ray.

Games isn't stored with framerates on a BD disc, it's not like a movie.

The player generates the framerates itselve. This is why they don't come in 1080p and run smooth. Because the PS3 isn't powerfull enough. Some games do, but don't run as smooth as others. Personally I think games in 720 looks terrible, but I'm used to play at a high powered PC.

And on the 1080p 3D BDs from PS3, I'll still only will believe it when it happends. There will be some sort of fault with this since the PS3 only have HDMI 1.3. It might only work on Sony TVs, and run their own 3D decode, where a 1080p/60 has 2x24 Fps + 12 dead frames, or something like this.

There is no bandwith diference between HDMI 1.3a and 1.4 (about 10,2 Gbit i think and that is more than enough for 3d in fullhd)

Those discs are for archival purposes and not to be used for the replication of movies or games. There are no BD players installed that can read them.

Or it will be a variation of BD-ROM only with more layers and a higher transfer rate.

The Cell BE within the PS3 cannot process frame packed 1080x60P. It isn't powerful enough.

It can process frame packed 1080x24P or 720x60P

This is a silly topic anyway. What does it matter? Being that you need to be sitting 3 or 4 feet away from a 50" screen for your eye to be able to tell the difference in resolution anyway, who cares? Does anyone really sit that close to a 50" screen? In order to take in the full view of the game, you need to be sitting far enough away where the 720p vs 1080p is useless as your eye can't detect the resolution anyway.

It still makes me laugh when people are "glad they got the 1080p" TV at hundreds of dollars more on a 42 inch screen 12 feet from their couch.

*edit* That isn't to say that the technical portion of this topic isn't interesting, whether or not and why the PS3 can or can't handle the processing of the data. I'm just saying that for all practical purposes, it just doesn't matter.

If this means it will play 3D BDs at their intended framerate and resolution rather than the 540 lines per eye that everyone was thinking the PS3 would be limited to, this is great as it means the only thing I need to replace to go 3D is my TV. Will still be awhile but not as long as it would be to buy a 3D BD player in addition to the TV.

I'm hoping this applies to ALL PS3 models, as I have the original 60GB. They have removed a lot of features between then and the slim, but the slim added the feature of bitstreaming lossless formats rather than converting them to PCM first, which as far as I know the original still can't do. I hope the old ones aren't missing something that makes the 3D full HD.

Maybe *you* can't tell the difference but seeing as I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 37" screen at 6' away please don't assume everyone is the same.

It's worth noting that very few big games actually run in 1080p, 720p is the standard. This is largely because it's a lot more difficult to lead development of a title on the PS3 than it is for the 360, so dev teams lead on the 360 on cross platform titles and then port to the PS3 afterwards.

The 360 isn't powerful enough to handle 1080p games well, an example is Resident Evil 5 which has FPS and image problems trying to run in 1080p. Disc space isn't actually much of an issue (DVD on 360 VS BD on PS3) - it's the 360 hardware.

We won't get universal 2D 1080p gameplay until the next generation of consoles, but hopefully 3D gaming won't scupper that...

The bandwith is ok, but HDMI 1.3 isn't specified to transport 3D, thus any TVs that connects to it will see its a 1.3, and not a 1.4, and then not apply the 3D convertion.

I believe there is a reason Sony waits untill fall to give us 3D from PS3, while their standalone players already have gotten the 3D firmware.

But 3D from games does work with the new TVs, so it might be a hope.
But anyway I'll never use the PS3 for a movie again. I'm waiting for Oppos 3D player.

Will Oppo not be able to make their players 3D with a FW upgrade?

Am I in the clear with this potential set up:

    60 gig PS3 ---> Onkyo TX-SR705 (HDMI 1.3a passthrough) ----> 3D-Ready Mitsu 82-838 ?

The whole HDMI 1.3/1.4 in regards to PS3 has been a little confusing

The OPPO BDP-83 is not capable of 3-D since the video chip set cannot handle 3-D. The 2006 model PS3 and newer PS3's are very amazing with its ability to be upgraded to new features like 3-D.
