OK...

(1) Maybe 30% tops of a movies soundtrack comes from the rear speakers, usually it's far less. The surrounds are meant to provide ambient sounds and aren't nearly as active as the center & fronts. Action movies are best known for utilizing the rear speakers.

(2) Speaker wire gauge is related to distance. The longer the distance, the higher gauge you need due to loss of power. I'd suggest ordering some new wire from monorprice. I personally used 12 gauge just to be safe.

Take my advice with a grain of salt I don't pretend to be an expert, maybe you could PM Josh Z or Mr. Speakers, maybe you'll get lucky and a certain beautiful Princess (winky winky KlipschGirl) will help you. They'll be able to explain much more in detail.
