Go for it! You won't be dissapointed. Hd dvd is a great format. With the price's you can get for 1080p why not? I plan on getting as many movie's as I can get my hand's on. I will alway's get the hd dvd over the blu-ray if I can find it.
I will say I would pass on the add-on and try and find a good standalone player like the a-30.
