What with games like Braid, and ESPECIALLY Little Big Planet on the cusp of revitalizing the genre, we should all ask while at the same time momentarily laying down our smackdown arms...wtf happened to the 2D genre of action/adventure platformers? I mean everything was going super great, games were only getting better when suddenly..."Oh we can make polygons now, no one will ever want to play a 2D game again! Once you go 3D you can never go back!!"
Does anyone remember Castlevania Symphony of the night, prelude to the grandeur of what next gen 2D games could have been? Does anyone remember the remarkable fun and interesting 2D games on the SNES? Well what the heck happened to the genre? It was ONLY becoming greater with time and then suddenly abandoned! Now, we have LBP coming out, games like Bionic commando rearmed and BRAID, showing just how great 2D games still are!! Wouldn't it be grand to have a next gen Metroid game be fully in 2D with "remarkable" "beautiful" graphics and art design? How about a new Castlevania game that redefines the artistry of what a 2D game can be? With current technology each character/unit could have thousands of frames of animation and be incredibly detailed and sharply rendered. Super next gen sprites could be fit to be some of the most impressive graphics ever seen, at this point a game could even transcend the animation quality of say, a classic Disney cartoon.
WHY ISN'T THIS HAPPENING ALREADY?
Will LBP and games like Braid transform the industry and revitalize the 2D genre? We can only hope. Thoughts?
