I don't have a PS3 so can't tell you exactly how to turn this off, but on other Blu-ray players there are separate settings for Resolution and for 1080p24 yes/no.

Thanks for the reply Josh. When I did the initial setup, the PS3 auto setup set the resolution at 1080p, so 1080p/24 was passed. I am getting a flash across the screen every few minutes, and I thought that maybe my 30ft HDMI cable was struggling with the bandwidth of 1080p, so I wanted to scale down to 720p to see if the flash went away, plus also to test the downscaling of the PS3 vs. that of the Panny.
I go into the video menu of the PS3, and choose manual setup instead of auto (working from memory here, I think I have this right), and I uncheck the 1080 boxes, leaving the 720p checked as the highest resolution. Sure enough, streaming video and the XMB show as 720p, but my Spiderman 3 keeps sending 1080p/24. I know the PS3 had a downscaling issue with 720 at one point, not sure what might be happening here.
